Dogs can have a very bad time in Fallas, a fiesta full of colour, light and sound with the incessant noise of fireworks and bangers. Their extremely sensitive hearing can turn this racket into a torture that causes them stress and anxiety. Some of them even hide under the bed, horrified, and too scared to pass the front door. But just like almost anything in life, there is a solution.
The most drastic remedy is to leave the city for the last few days of maximum decibels with the mascletàs and firework displays, but as this is not always possible one can rely on common sense, avoid taking the dog out during peak noise hours or visit the vet.
Eguzkine Martin Landa, of El Palau Vetinary Clinic, was pioneer in administering his patients with a herb-based homeopathic mixture that relaxes the animal without any of the setbacks of tranquilizers or sedatives.
The dosis will depend on the size and character of the animal, but the important point is to start the treatment in time. Consult your vet if you want to stop your pet from becoming a bag of nerves.
