Sagunt a Escena, Valencia’s top performing arts festival, once again arrives to make the summer evenings appealing for Saguntinos and others until the end of August, thanks to a varied programme covering every type of performing trend.
Free outdoor shows, using the streets of Sagunto as an improvised stage, include Els mercaders de Sagunt and Bacant.es which, together with other performances, will enliven the city throughout the festival. The scheduled bill focuses on dance, with the participation of outstanding national and international companies, including the Compañía Nacional de Danza with their three performances Gnawa, O Domina Nostra and Hevel, the company 3ème étage, formed by dancers of the Opéra de Paris, presenting the eclectic shows Virtuosités variées, and Antonio, an intense homage to dancer Antonio Ruiz by the Compañía Antonio Márquez.
The spirit of Sagunt a Escena originated in the staging of plays within the classical tradition, and the festival bill gives space to Greek tragedy Ajax and the Platonic comedy Miles Gloriosus, put on in the renowned Festival de Mérida, as well as two works of Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice and Hamlet. The festival won’t lack music - the Duo de la Africana will be representing the zarzuela genre, and Rosario Flores’ much-anticipated latest musical, Parte de mi, will close this year’s festival.
