What has been your career?

I was born here. My grandfather founded the bookshop in 1947. I grew up among these shelves. I can’t imagine to do another job, the library represents my life.

The library is 61 years old. What should you do to advance with the passing of time?

This work is essential to bring up to date, and I’m not referring only to new publications. New technologies, especially the Internet, has revolutionized the way we work, in the offices and in the communication with our customers.

What are the specializations of the bookshop?

We try to cover a little bit of everything, but we specialize in textbooks for competitives, youth and children's literature, and foreign magazines. We also sell a lot of tourist guides of Valencia.

What is the typical profile of the customer?

Most of the clients are women. Many young people come too, because this area is a place of entertainment for them, and we also are close to a school.

Does the world of the book is in crisis?

We are in a period of conversion: like any other discipline, literature also has to modernise and adapt to the world today. I think one of the possible reasons for the crisis in the book is that the world in which we live we need time, even for reading. But we have not time anymore.

Does poetry and drama belong to the past?

I think the poetic genre is suffering much by the rhythm of modern life. To appreciate all the nuances of a poem is necessary to be calm, to have more time. And time is just what we lack today. The theater still sold, almost only a minority of customers interested in stage a play.

What was the most successful book of the last season?

Undoubtedly "A world without end" by Ken Follet, and "A boy in the striped pajamas" by John Boyne. The Boyne’s novel surprised us, because it hasn’t been well promoted, but won a stunning success. I think, without exaggeration, which the book’ll replace what was until now the Anne Frank’s diary.

How much read a bookseller?

I believe that any bookseller enjoys reading. We read both as a passion for work and for work, because it’s essential to have a general knowledge of books, authors and genres, to be able to advise our clients.
